[29/01/2010 18:00:00] Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland participated on 29 January in the events marking the opening of the judicial year of the European Court of Human Right. This is a promising beginning of the year for the Court with the State Duma of the Russian Federation voting in favour of the ratification of Protocol 14 to the European Convention of Human Rights, which will clear the way for the reform of the Court, as highlighted at the press conference by the Court’s President Costa. Costa also underlined that the Lisbon Treaty which had entered into force in December 2009 and opened the path for the European Union to join the European Convention, would be a major step towards creating a European fundamental rights space. Secretary General once again stressed that he will work together with the Court’s President Costa to address essential questions regarding the future of the Court.
